Hello Troop 533,
You are invited to participate in a Winter Hike and Map/Compass Class on Saturday, December 21 to be led by Mr. Shelton and Mr. Thompson.  All are welcome, but those pursuing Second Class rank should definitely come to this event.  Items a, c and d below will be reviewed in depth during the meeting on December 11th.
We will meet at Elliott Elementary at 8:30am for an 8:40am departure to Indiana Dunes.  The class and hike will last from 9am-11:30am and we will aim to be back to Elliott by noon or shortly after.  While there, we will cover the following Second Class rank requirements:

  1. Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map. Use a map to point out and tell the meaning of five map symbols.
  2. Using a compass and map together, take a 5-mile hike (or 10 miles by bike) approved by your adult leader and your parent or guardian.
  3. Describe some hazards or injuries that you might encounter on your hike and what you can do to help prevent them.
  4. Demonstrate how to find directions during the day and at night without using a compass or an electronic device.

Scouts must have appropriate clothing, shoes, backpack, water bottle, book, first aid kit and a good attitude.  We will have compasses and maps for participants to share.  If you would like to bring a compass it should be the type shown far below.  We hope many of you will be able to make it!

Yours in Scouting,
Mr. Shelton and Mr.Thompson
